Draka Cableteq USA Joins Green Suppliers Network
|
February 18, 2010 – North Dighton, MA – As part of an on-going effort to be at the
forefront of modern, environmentally responsible manufacturing, the Draka
Cableteq USA, Inc.. Schuylkill Haven facility recently participated in the Green
Suppliers Network’s exhaustive technical review and is now proud to announce
that it has become a Partner in the Green Suppliers Network (GSN).
The Green Suppliers Network is a collaborative venture among Industry, the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of Commerce's
Manufacturing Extension Partnership. The goal of the Green Suppliers Network
is to help small and medium –sized manufacturers stay competitive
and profitable while reducing their impact on the environment.
The Green Suppliers Network is making a significant difference for US
manufacturers. It leverages a national network of manufacturing technical
assistance resources to help companies become more sustainable and
profitable.
Nominated by one of the Green Suppliers Network’s Corporate Champions,
Draka underwent an in-depth onsite technical review of all manufacturing
processes, power usage, waste streams, scrap, recycling and the impact of their
wire & cable products on the environment.
The Schuylkill Haven facility had already implemented Lean manufacturing and
had earned an ISO: 14001 certificate for its environmental policies, and had
embraced a systematic approach to eliminating waste and minimizing the
company’s impact on the environment. Building on this foundation, the Green
Suppliers Network was able to take Draka a step further towards environmental
stewardship and environmentally sustainable products.
“It is an honor to be recognized for our on-going environmental efforts and we are
proud to be associated with the GSN network”, says Rich Parvesse, Business
Unit Director.
He adds, “Draka invests substantial time, money and resources in putting
programs in place to eliminate waste in the manufacturing process, and to adopt
standards such as RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) to make our
products safe and sustainable. We believe that our lean manufacturing coupled
with sound environmental management strategies deliver a superior value to our
customers. Being a GSN Partner is one more step that Draka has taken in our
commitment to responsible environmental stewardship.”

Draka Cableteq USA Awarded $3.2 Million Grant from DOE to Develop Next Generation Downhole Cable
|
|
November 2, 2009 – North Dighton, MA – Draka Cableteq USA, manufacturer of wire and cable
products since 1905, announced today that it has received a $3.2 million grant from the United
States Department of Energy to support the development of a new generation of tools that will
allow Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) to supply the United States with much clean,
carbon-neutral electrical power.
EGS uses water injected deep into the earth to generate steam to run electrical turbines. One
EGS power plant has the potential to generate power equivalent to more than 40 wind turbines or
a coal-fired plant. The DOE has set a goal of generating 20% of the US electrical power by 2020
via geothermal sources. It is anticipated that this will be accomplished by establishing EGS
plants in as many as 20 states.
Under the EGS award program, Draka will develop and bring to market high temperature 374°C
(705°F) hydrogen-insensitive fiber optic cable for distributed temperature and pressure sensing
throughout the wellbore and high temperature electrical cable for running pumps, sensors and
tools deep inside the well. Insulated wire and glass fiber cables are a crucial enabling technology
for EGS. Without wire and fiber, downhole tools such as temperature and pressure sensors
cannot communicate with the surface. However, high temperatures and formation of hydrogen
within the well makes the use of insulated conductors problematic and also results in the rapid
degradation of glass fiber. There is currently no cable that can operate in a well hotter than 300°C
for a period greater than a few days.
Mark Lowell PhD, Draka’s Vice President of Innovation and Principal Investigator for the Grant
explains that “EGS depend on the ability to monitor conditions throughout the wellbore. Our hydrogen insensitive
optical fiber will provide a means for obtaining temperature measurements at thousands of points in the well.
We are extremely grateful for the assistance our partners in this project will provide, including
Sandia National Laboratories, AltaRock Energy and PermaWorks. We are also exceedingly
grateful to Congressmen Barney Frank and Patrick McHenry for their support for our proposal.”
